Client Success Story: Reclaiming Health, Hope, and Confidence

Reclaiming Health, Hope, and Confidence

At El Centro de Amistad, we are honored to walk alongside individuals on their journey toward healing and self-discovery. Luis’s story is a powerful example of resilience, growth, and the impact of compassionate care.

Luis, a 50-year-old immigrant from El Salvador, sought support after being diagnosed with diabetes and experiencing symptoms of depression. Encouraged by his doctor, he reached out for help and began services through ECDA’s Adult Prevention and Early Intervention program.

When Luis first entered treatment, he struggled with feelings of sadness, isolation, low motivation, and anxiety. These challenges made it difficult for him to leave his home or maintain employment. His experiences were shaped by a difficult childhood, including early exposure to family violence and loss, which continued to impact his emotional well-being into adulthood.

With the support of his clinician, Luis began building tools to better understand and manage his emotions. Through therapy, he learned to identify physical and emotional cues, challenge negative thought patterns, and develop healthy coping strategies. He also received case management support, including connections to food resources, nutrition education, and community support groups.

One of Luis’s greatest breakthroughs came in learning to practice self-compassion. Initially, he blamed himself for his diabetes diagnosis, but through therapy, he gained a new perspective, recognizing that he had not been given the tools or knowledge earlier in life to support a healthy lifestyle. This shift allowed him to begin treating himself with kindness and forgiveness.

Over time, Luis made remarkable progress. He began working part-time, reconnecting socially, and engaging in activities he once avoided. He took meaningful steps to improve his physical health, including adopting healthier eating habits and incorporating regular exercise into his routine. As a result, he lost over 19 pounds and gained greater confidence in managing his health.

Today, Luis is actively participating in his community, attending church, spending time with friends, and enjoying outdoor activities like walking and hiking. He has developed the ability to recognize his emotions, respond to them in healthy ways, and take steps to protect his well-being.

As Luis prepares to complete his services at ECDA, he leaves with renewed strength, confidence, and hope for the future. His journey is a testament to the power of support, resilience, and the belief that meaningful change is always possible.
