At just 15 years old, Benjamin, an 8th grader at Vaughn Next Century Learning Center, has already faced challenges that many of us might struggle to overcome. Living with his family—including his parents, younger brother, and grandmother—in a close-knit home, Benjamin is bilingual in English and Spanish and represents the heart of a resilient Mexican-American family.
In September 2023, Benjamin was referred to mental health services through his school following a traumatic accident during vacation, which left him with a fractured femur. The physical pain and limitations that came with his injury began to take a toll on his emotional well-being. Benjamin’s mother reported significant changes in his behavior, including irritability, decreased energy, and struggles with self-esteem. At school, his counselor noted difficulties with peer interactions and moments of aggression, including incidents where he broke school equipment.
Recognizing the need for support, Benjamin began therapy through ECDA’s Step Care Program with MHC Garcia. With Benjamin’s physical limitations, therapy sessions took place in the comfort of his home, creating a safe environment for healing.
Initially, Benjamin struggled to express his emotions surrounding the accident and surgery. However, through consistent weekly sessions, MHC Garcia built a strong rapport with Benjamin, helping him to open up about his feelings. Using a blend of play therapy, cognitive behavioral techniques, and creative activities like arts and crafts, Benjamin learned to process his anger and sadness, identify triggers, and practice positive communication.
The collaborative approach extended beyond therapy sessions. Benjamin’s mother actively participated in his treatment, maintaining open communication with MHC Garcia and implementing interventions at home. She learned how to validate Benjamin’s feelings, provide positive reinforcement, and foster healthier communication within the family. His school counselor also joined the effort, contributing to a multidisciplinary support system.
After a year of dedicated work, Benjamin’s transformation was remarkable. His irritability and sadness decreased significantly, he built healthier relationships with peers, and his self-esteem, mood, and energy levels improved. By August 2024, Benjamin had reached his therapeutic goals and was discharged with a bright prognosis for the future.
Benjamin’s story is a testament to the power of resilience, family support, and a caring community. His journey reminds us that with the right tools and a strong support system, even the toughest challenges can become stepping stones to growth and healing.
