Back to School: Tips for Caregivers

Children Emotional Support

Back-to-school season brings a lot of emotions for kids and for caregivers. While some children are excited to get back to their friends and routines, others may feel nervous, overwhelmed, or uncertain. All of these reactions are normal. Here are some helpful tips to help kids and caregivers prepare for a successful back-to-school season.

  • One of the best things you can do is create a predictable routine before school starts. Gradually adjust bedtimes, practice the morning routine, and talk through what the first day might look like. Familiarity helps reduce anxiety.
  • If your child expresses worries, try to listen before jumping in to solve the problem. Simple responses like, “It makes sense that you’re feeling nervous,” can go a long way. Feeling understood often helps children more than having all the answers.
  • The first few weeks of school can be exhausting. Your child may be more emotional, tired, or easily frustrated as they adjust to new expectations. Give them some extra patience, time to decompress after school, and opportunities to connect with you. The following questions can often lead to more meaningful conversations:
  • Instead of asking, “How was school?” try questions like:
  • What was the best part of your day? o Did anything surprise you today?
  • Who did you spend time with? o Was anything challenging?

Finally, remember that success isn’t just about grades. Helping your child feel safe, supported, and confident is just as important. When children know they have a trusted adult who will listen and encourage them, they’re better prepared to handle whatever the school year brings.
